Six questions to ask before getting filler

Six honest questions to ask before filler—from product choice and treatment areas to cost and emergency warning signs.

Before having filler, you have every right to ask what is being injected, why a particular area is being treated and what could go wrong. I don't think those questions are rude. If anything, I'd rather someone ask them now than leave the clinic unsure what they've agreed to.

First: why are we treating that particular area?

Say you're bothered by a smile line, but I suggest we look at the temples or cheeks as well. Ask me why. My approach often starts from facial structure rather than the visible groove itself, but I should be able to explain the connection without hiding behind medical vocabulary.

Second: what if I don't do it now?

An injection isn't the only possible next step. Depending on the problem, alternatives may include skincare, another procedure, waiting or not treating at all. Ask how the different choices compare in cost, expected benefit and risk.

Third: which product will be used, and why?

You deserve to know the exact product, its authenticity and appropriate regulatory status, not just that it comes from Korea or Europe. Different fillers have different properties and uses. A familiar brand name isn't a substitute for a medical explanation.

Fourth: how was the quantity decided?

A number of syringes is not an outcome. Ask what each proposed area is meant to achieve and what difference there might be if you do less. I would rather explain a staged plan than imply that buying more volume automatically creates a better face.

Fifth: what happens if there's a problem?

Ask about bruising, swelling, lumps, infection and rare serious vascular complications. You should know how to contact the clinic urgently, and what symptoms require immediate medical attention. Severe pain, unusual pale or dusky skin, and any visual changes after filler are urgent warning signs.

Sixth: what result is realistic?

A result can be subtle, may take time to assess and will not make every face look like a reference photo. Ask what could remain unchanged. Clear limits at the beginning are much better than disappointment based on an unrealistic promise.

If several areas are proposed, ask how they connect

Someone who comes in for one line may be surprised to hear about three different areas. There may be a reasonable structural explanation, or there may be a simpler plan that suits the budget better. Ask what is essential, what is optional and what can wait. A good plan should make sense in ordinary language.

Questions patients ask

Is a more expensive filler automatically better?

No. Price alone does not prove a product is the right one for your anatomy and goal.

Should I wait if I have severe pain and my skin changes colour after filler?

No. Seek urgent medical assessment immediately. Visual changes are also an emergency warning sign.
