Bright skin: Melasma, marks or dryness?

Clear skin is about more than being fairer. I explain the difference between pigment, acne marks, scars and irritated skin.

“I want brighter skin” is one of the broadest requests I hear. One person has brown marks after acne, another has persistent redness, another has melasma, and someone else has skin that's simply dry and irritated. I don't want to give all of them the same injection just because they all use the word “glow.”

Red marks, dark marks and depressed scars are different

After acne, a red mark may reflect lingering redness, while a brown mark involves pigment. A depressed scar is about structural change in the skin. A cream that helps discolouration won't necessarily lift a scar. The first useful step is identifying which problem is present.

Melasma doesn't have one universal shortcut

Sun exposure, skin type and other factors play a role. Management often takes patience, suitable skincare and consistent sun protection. I'm cautious when a treatment is advertised as if it can erase every patch of melasma quickly and permanently.

Sometimes dull skin is simply unhappy skin

Dryness and a damaged skin barrier can make a complexion look rough or tired. Adding procedures while the skin is burning or peeling may not be the sensible first move. Sometimes adjusting skincare and moisturising properly is where we should begin.

Where do skin mesotherapy, PN and PDRN fit?

They're different products and treatment categories, not interchangeable names for “skin food.” I want to know the actual ingredients, what the product is intended for and whether it fits the concern. I don't think a trendy ingredient should be the starting point for the consultation.

Healthy skin isn't just about being fairer

For me, less irritation, better hydration, fewer persistent marks and healthier texture all matter. Your natural skin colour doesn't need to change dramatically for your skin to be well cared for.

Please don't forget the everyday basics

Sun protection, moisturiser and a manageable routine matter even when a procedure is part of the plan. Treatments don't replace those steps. We also need to look at acne control, product allergies and how the skin has reacted to previous care.

If your skin is already irritated, I'd rather not rush

Someone comes in with burning, peeling skin and a shelf full of new skincare products. My first instinct isn't to add another injection. I want to understand what irritated the skin and help it settle. Once it's calmer, we can look again at pigment, scars or hydration and decide what actually remains to be treated.

Questions patients ask

Are skin mesotherapy and mesofat the same?

No. They are used for different purposes, with different preparations and considerations.

Can skincare alone fix a depressed acne scar?

A true depressed scar is a structural change, so skincare alone is unlikely to restore the missing tissue.
